Lake Glenn Shoals is 1250 Acres with an average depth of 10 feet and 26.82 miles of shoreline. The lake was constructed in 1976 as a primary source of water for customers on the Hillsboro Water System. Normal pool elevation is 590.1 with flood stage at 600.1.
The lake was stocked with bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, hybrid stipers, and tiger muskie. Glenn Shoals has always been known as a great catfishing lake, but lately we have seen an increase in crappie fishing and bass fishing. (The City of Hillsboro maintains a brood pond for the raising of largemouth bass. Each year they raise and place about 7,000 6 to 10 inch bass into the lake.) Creel and size limits are as follows:
Largemouth Bass.......3 fish...................min. 15 inches
Tiger Muskie..........1 fish...........min. 30 inches.
Hyrbrid Striper..........2 fish............min. 17 inches.
The maximum speed limit on Glenn Shoals lake is 35 m.p.h. from the dam to the bridge. North of the bridge is 5 m.p.h. and "No Wake"
There is a full service marina located at the South end of the lake located on the West side of the dam, below the parking lot and boat launch. There is a second boat launch ramp at the North end of the lake. All boats are required to obtain a City boat permit before accessing the lake. Permits are available at the Marina, Sherwood Forest Campground, Hillsboro Fire Department, and City Hall. (You will need proof of insurance as well as horsepower.) Lake regulations are posted at each access area.
All play a major role in our economy.
We offer a large skiing and motor-boating area as well as no wake areas for canoeing and sailing.
Lake Glenn Shoals has two (2) boat launching ramps (1) at each end of the lake.
We as the City Of Hillsboro rely on keeping a clean and safe lake so when people use our facility they go home telling others how nice it is and hopefully others will come.
We try very hard to keep our lake looking good and it has (1) full time patrolman to promote safety and well being for our patrons.
And we would like to continue for years to come.
Camping on Lake Glenn Shoals consists of persons leasing a lake front lot for camping by tent only no camper's motor homes etc.
The lease lot is 100' frontage by 50' depth.
99% of these lease lots are only accessible by boat.
At this time we do not have a bicycle trail or designated area for bicycles but we do not discourage people from riding to our facilities on their bicycles.
We have no facilities on Lake Glenn Shoals for swimming but do allow persons to swim at their own lake lots.
With the combined effort and hard work by (3) organizations we have built a fine picnic pavilion near our south boat access which offers shade, protection from rain and a wonderful view of the lake and marina complex on Lake Glenn Shoals.
We currently have no hiking trails but offer over 1200 acres in which a person is welcome to hike on City owned property around Lake Glenn Shoals
Old Lake Hillsboro is a 100 acre surface impoundment constructed in 1918 as a primary source of water for Hillsboro. Hillsboro boating permits are good at both lakes. The lake has bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and carp. The lake has a 10 m.p.h. speed limit with no horsepower limit. There is a swimming beach located near the dam. Sherwood Forest Campground is also on this lake, they have 200 electrical campsites as well as primitive sites. The campground has shower and laundry facilities.
